Pine Grove:  Juvenile Institution or Adult Institution?

Indiana, PA, U.S.—October 3, 2002—Currently, there has been a discrepancy at the state correctional institution(SCI) of Pine Grove regarding the question, “Is this institution a juvenile correctional institution or an adult correctional institution?”

SCI- Pine Grove is located in Indiana County, Indiana, PA.  It was built to facilitate young adult offender males.  The facility is a maximum-security institution for juvenile males.  The Young Adult Offender Program (YAOP) was created and implemented to allow those offenders between the ages of 15-20 to become educated, receive adolescent development and recreation, while at the same time providing a safe environment for the juvenile males.

At this moment, there has been an imperfection with the way the institution has been operating the facility.  Apparently, the institution is not only accommodating juvenile inmates, but it is also accommodating adult inmates.  The question is, “Are the facilitators at SCI- Pine Grove performing their responsibilities to provide a maximum-security facility for Young Adult Offender males?”

According to several individuals who work within the institution, the guidelines for operating SCI-Pine Grove are being overlooked.  If they choose to accommodate inmates other than juveniles, then the guidelines need to be readdressed and established for the institution to accommodate inmates other than that of juveniles.
