PA State Corrections Officers Association supports legislation prohibiting privatization of nursing services.

Text of April 30 press release.

Harrisburg - Leaders of The Pennsylvania State Corrections Officers Association (PSCOA) attended a Capitol news conference in support of Rep. Mike Veon and Rep. Larry Sather's legislation to prohibit the Department of Corrections (DOC) from privatizing nursing and other services.

"We are in support of this and any legislation which will prevent privatization from occurring," stated Roy Pinto, a PSCOA Vice President.

The DOC should remain the sole contractor for nursing and other services. Allowing private contractors to step in and manage these areas within the institutions would create the possibility to change current standards and regulations.

"Private contractors have a history of inferior quality compared to that of state-managed facilities. We want to see the state correctional institutions standards become above the norm; we certainly do not want to see the standards fall below the norm," Pinto added.

The DOC should reconsider their plan to potentially allow private contractors to manage the nursing and other services in the state correctional institutions.
